The Untouchables?

In an earlier life I was the Legal Director of the Occupational Pensions Regulatory Authority, the predecessor body to the current Pension Regulator. One of the issues which took up a considerable amount of management and investigatory time concerned a scam called ‘Pension Liberation’. It worked like this.
Gullible people desperate for cash would be [...]

New ERISA and Global Benefits Blog

I have been blogging for over seven years and enjoy it immensely. I never run out of topics but, like most bloggers, it is always good to read what others have to say. That is why I am excited to welcome Paul Hastings ERISA partners, Stephen Harris and Mark Poerio, to the blogosphere (although Attorney Poerio tells me that he created www.erisacloud.com and www.executiveloyalty.org several years ago for his Georgetown Law School students). My understanding is that the content for this newly launched blog will generally focus on the design, governance, and operation of retirement plans, health and welfare plans, and executive compensation plans. It will include information about legislative, regulatory, and litigation developments, from a practical business perspective. Attorney Poerio adds that "As lawyers, we are generally concerned with risk management, and our blog has that objective in mind."

Click to access the ERISA and Global Benefits blog. You can click here to add this new blog to your RSS reader as well.

Their pensions proposals are unfair and unacceptable and it’s time for them to get back to the negotiating table and make a better offer. Disappointingly, their initial response has not been to acknowledge the unprecedented strength of feeling but [...]

We need more hospital bankruptcies, not procedural changes

The NHS’s internal system of handling patients’ complaints is broken, argues a new government report published by a commission headed by Labour MP Ann Clwyd. Patients who file a complaint about matters such as staff rudeness, neglect, poor quality of care etc. often find that their concerns are delayed, played down, met with defensiveness or denial, and ultimately remain inconsequential. This represents a major failure because if complaints from patients and carers had been taken seriously, the calamities of Mid Staffordshire might have been prevented, and so would many other less well-known cases of collapses in care standards.
