Anything but planning: our housing debate is like the 1970s debate on inflation

In the British media, you can find a lot of ‘explanations’ of the increase in house prices and rents: immigration, landlords’ greed, speculation, the sale of council flats, too much mortgage lending, too little mortgage lending... anything, in fact, except the one thing that really causes it: the crippling of the supply side through planning restrictions.
