Richard Hughes is just the man to persuade Martyr (3.35) to put his all in and take the Cesarewitch at Newmarket today. Expensively bought at the end of 2010, he has stretched the patience of connections by being sidelined with injuries but his latest fourth at Ascot against higher-rated rivals suggests strongly that perseverance will be rewarded.
Of all the 157 winners Hughes has partnered this year, none will need the kid gloves treatment as much as the fragile Martyr, who tends to curl up under maximum pressure. But if his finishing effort can be delayed for as long as possible, he has a real touch of class which few of these rivals are likely to be able to match.
Newmarket 1.50 The likeable Libranno can be hard to reel in when given an easy time in front, but he may struggle to give weight away to these rivals. It could instead pay to take a chance on Fencing 's wellbeing on his first start since Royal Ascot.
York 2.05 Plenty of these find it hard to string two good runs together, but Kaldoun Kingdom has form in testing ground and can reverse recent course and distance form with Tax Free.
Newmarket 2.20 Bound for victory until clipping heels with a rival and falling at the Curragh, Cristoforo Colombo can find compensation. He does not mind some cut in the ground but the same may not be true of Moohaajim. Reckless Abandon already has a Group One win but has shown some quirks under pressure and may also need a rail to keep him straight.
York 2.35 Having faced some stiff tasks, Chapter Seven could find this represents a slightly easier assignment and the pick of his form gives him every chance.
Newmarket 2.55 Jim Bolger has never made a secret of the esteem in which he holds Dawn Approach and it will be a surprise if his unbeaten record is brought to an end here, despite the considerable promise shown by Ashdan.
York 3.10 Untried on a soft surface, Odooj 's ability to handle conditions must be taken on trust, but his pedigree suggests it won't be a problem.
York 3.45 Disappointing in the Ayr Gold Cup on his return from a break, Mirza showed a lot more when a subsequent fourth at Ascot, where he raced alone against the rail. He loves some give in the ground.
